Goodreads! It's Not Just for Grown-ups!
Did you know that Goodreads has awesome book lists, not just for grown-ups but for children of all ages too? I didn’t know that. But when someone pointed it out to me, you better believe I took full advantage of it!
We get new ideas for our book collections from a variety of sources, including library journals like School Library Journal, or Publisher’s Weekly. I also like to check out Amazon.com’s Best Books of the Month section at the beginning of every month. But sometimes, those sources just aren’t enough. Enter goodreads.com.
For instance, this list https://www.goodreads.com/list/show/74271.Picture_Books_of_2016 tells us titles of current and upcoming picture books for the year 2016. This is a place I look to for ordering new material but it is also an invaluable resource when I’m looking for good books for storytime! Each title has a brief summary of the book and more often than not a rating with stars and several reviews. It’s in the reviews, from people like me and you, where I find out that a book was funny, or good to read to a large group, or better for one on one sharing.
There are lists like this available for all kinds of different subjects, publication dates, age groups, you name it! From the home page you just look under the tab that says “Lists” and you’ll be able to type in whatever it is you’d like to search for.
So, while being a great place to keep track of your own reading experience, Goodreads is a great tool for reader’s advisory - in the library and at home!
