First Grade Dropout
By: Audrey Vernick
Illustrated by Matthew Cordell
J PICTURE
The boy in this story has been lots of things before: Hungry. Four years old. Crazy bored. Nothing too strange, right? Until one day at school he makes a mistake so big that his entire class laughs, and he’s sure he will never be able to go back to Lakeview Elementary School again. Then, he devises the perfect plan: drop out of school! Before that happens though, the narrator finds that he isn’t the only one who makes mistakes sometimes and that embarrassing things happen to everyone!
With a lot of humor and simple, watercolor illustrations, this is a great read for grown ups to read along with their little one. Along with being an enjoyable story, readers of all ages will find the narrator’s feelings familiar, and discover that even though embarrassing things happen, they’re usually not as bad as they seem--and sometimes they’re even funny!
