Yitzi and the Giant Menorah
By: Richard Ungar
This is the story of the people of Chelm who were gifted by the Mayor of a neighboring town, Lublin, with a giant menorah for Chanukah. The people of Chelm feel they must thank the mayor for such a generous gift, but are unable to agree on how. After several failed attempts, the young boy Yitzi comes up with the perfect way to both celebrate Chanukah and thank the mayor of Lublin at the same time.
This is a beautiful book with watercolor monoprint illustrations that to me are reminiscent of Vincent VanGogh. The book also includes a brief introduction to the story of Chanukah holiday in a note at the end of the story. It’s a perfect way to help children understand one of the many diverse celebrations of the winter season.
