I Am Rosa Parks
By: Brad Meltzer
Illustrated By: Christopher Eliopoulos
This picture book biography of Rosa Parks is a great introduction for kids to learn about her life as well as the Civil Rights Movement. Young readers are first introduced to Rosa as a young child in a segregated school and continue on through the Montgomery Bus Boycott. The pages are full of colorful pictures and are layed out in a graphic-novel style, with text bubbles and characters with a lot of expression. While the book touches on the delicate subject of racial discrimination, it is presented in a way that is simple to read and approachable. Readers will be left with the important message that it is important to stay strong and stand up for what is right.

Tuesday Tucks Me In
By: Luis Carlos Montalvan & Bret Witter
Photographs By: Dan Dion
Tuesday is a loyal, well-trained service dog who helps Luis, a disabled veteran, get through every day life. Told from Tuesday’s perspective, this story lets you follow him as he helps Luis stay steady on the subway, visit a veteran’s hospital, and even relax at home enjoying each other’s company. While Tuesday is a “working dog,” the book still shows that he is just like any other dog, who loves to play and be petted. This is a heart warming, true story that allows us to glimpse into the life of a man, his dog, and their unique bond.
