Stone Soup
By: Marcia Brown
This is a story based on an old French tale, about three hungry soldiers who happened upon a village. The villagers did not want to share their food and hid it all! The soldiers, suspecting that this was the case decided to make Stone Soup, or soup from water and three stones. What follows is a lesson in sharing or, as the song in the video below says “If we each bring a little, we all get a lot!”
Originally published in 1947, and a Caldecott Honor Book, I’m sure it’s a tale many of us remember. I remember my 25-year-old son’s third grade class doing it as a play! We have this title in the library in two forms, a picture book and a media kit, which includes the book and a cd of the story. This is the perfect time of year to share this story with your children and discuss how when we come together, we can achieve so much!

L M N O Peas!
By: Keith Baker
This adorable alphabet book is told by a sweet bunch of little tiny peas! They are peas – alphabet peas! – that work and play in the ABCs! Each letter is accompanied by several pea careers that begin with the corresponding letter. The book rhymes and the illustrations are darling, inspiring what I am sure will be repeat readings!
What’s great is, that while you may have to read this one multiple times, eventually you can share with your little person that there are several volumes starring this bunch of sweet peas! These include 123 Peas, Little Green Peas and, newly released this month, Hap-pea All Year, which is a book of months.

Dragons Love Tacos
By: Adam Rubin
Illustrated By: Daniel Salmieri
I did not know, until I became a children’s librarian about this rare fact. Dragons love tacos! Who knew? But this information comes with a caveat. Keep the spicy away. The dragon digestive system doesn’t deal well with spicy salsa. Meat, cheese, lettuce and of course, the crunchy tortilla are all fine, and your dragon will love the tacos! Unfortunately, the little boy in this book missed the part about no spice! You’ll have to read to find out what happens to a dragon who eats spicy salsa!
The internet is full of ideas for activities to go along with this book! But why not just plan a family taco night? You could read the book, set up a taco bar with all of the ingredients mentioned in the book and let your little one make his very own taco! This one hits all the right buttons, literacy, sensory and nutrition! And of course humor – grown-ups as well as little ones are sure to love this book! And who doesn’t love tacos? Just remember – no spicy salsa!
