Thankful Turkey Craft
Books about Thankfulness at the Library:
Thankful Turkey Craft
- Materials: Construction paper (brown, red, orange, yellow and other colors), 2 googly eyes, glue stick, marker, Turkey template printable (or you can just freehand the different parts)
- Directions:
- Print the turkey template, unless you would like to freehand the circles, feathers, and wattle.
- Cut out the parts in the template. If you want, you can use the body, beak, and wattle provided. Or you can trace around these items and cut them out of construction paper.
- Trace around the feather on different colored construction paper and cut it out. You will probably need at least 10 feathers. You could have your child cut those out, if they already know how to cut curved lines.
- Have your child tell you what they are thankful for and write one thing on each feather.
- Have your child glue the beak to the center of the turkey’s body. Have them glue the wattle next to the beak. Have them glue the googly eyes above that.
- Turn the turkey body over and have them glue feathers on one at a time.
- The turkey is done!

Crayon Box Name Puzzle
Early Literacy Tip: Our craft today is called a name puzzle because kids have to sort out the letters in their name in the right order. Name puzzles like this can help children with letter recognition (the ability to recognize and name letters). Letter recognition is one of the first steps to learning to read!
Books about school at the library:
Crayon Box Name Puzzle
- Materials: printable Crayon template, printer paper, yellow construction paper, scissors, coloring supplies
- Directions:
- Go to https://natashalh.com/crayon-templates/ and click the link to “download the set of 10 crayon template”. Print the crayon template on white paper.
- Let your child color in the crayons, leaving white space in the center of each crayon for writing later on.
- Cut out the crayons. (children may need help with this)
- Fold the yellow construction paper almost in half hamburger style so that one side sticks out about 1” farther than the other.
- Glue the inside edges of the yellow paper together, leaving the top edge unglued. This will be your “crayon box”.
- Adults, write one letter of your child’s name on each crayon. If your child is just learning their alphabet, use all capitals. If they can recognize capital letters, use capital and lower case. If you want to make the puzzle easier for your child, you can also write “_child’s name_ Crayon Box” on the front of the crayon box. Then your child will just have to match the letters on the crayons to the order that they see on the box.
- Mix up the letters and have your child sort them out in the right order to make their name, then put them in the box when they are done. You can keep doing the puzzle as many times as you want by pulling the crayons out of the box and mixing them up again.

Animal Cracker Zoo
Early Literacy Tip: Allowing children freedom in construction play like this helps them be creative, think independently, and make decisions based on what they are learning, which are skills that will help them later in education. Construction play can also build problem solving and fine motor skills.
Great stories about food at the library:
Bear Smores
- Ingredients: 2 graham cracker halves, 1 large marshmallow, 4 mini marshmallows butter knife, 4 mini chocolate chips, 2 large chocolate chips, squeeze bottle of chocolate frosting
- Directions: For detailed instructions on how to make the Bear Smores, head to: https://blog.peacebewithu.com/creative-food-ideas-for-kids-bear-smores/ You can substitute Nutella for the frosting if you would like.
Animal Cracker Zoo
- Ingredients: wax paper, squeeze bottle of chocolate frosting, large pretzel sticks, small pretzel sticks, animal crackers
- Directions:
- Spread the wax paper out on the table.
- Use the pretzel sticks to make fences for your animal crackers, using the icing to stick them together. You can build any way that you want, but make sure all of your animals have a place to live!
- When you’re all done, take a picture of your zoo and send it to [email protected], so we can see your creativity!
- Tip: One way to build the fence that I found works well is to put 2 pretzel sticks down going one direction. Then put frosting on the ends and stick two more pretzels down going the other direction. Then repeat until the fence is as high as you want it to be.

- If the bow is too big, pull the ends of the ribbon to make the bow the size that you want it. Then cut the excess ribbon off the ends.
- Your jingle bell wreath is ready! You can hold it in your hand, put it on your wrist, or put it around your ankle and shake to some jingly songs!

Craft:
Paper Plate Bear- Materials: brown construction (or tissue) paper, paper plate, gluestick/elmers glue, googly eyes (or white construction paper and a black marker), pink construction paper (or print my template), tan construction paper (or print my template), scissors
- Have your child rip up brown construction paper
- Have your child glue the construction paper to a paper plate (does not matter which side). If you do not have a paper plate, you can cut a large circle out of construction paper and have them glue the brown construction paper to that to make the textured effect.
- Cut out 2 small circles out of brown construction paper for the ears and 1 small circle/oval out of tan paper for the mouth. Cut out 2 slightly smaller circles out of pink construction paper for the ears. If you need help with sizing, use my attached pdf template. I tried to color it so that if you do not have tan or pink construction paper, you can print the template twice and use that instead.
- Have your child glue the pink circles onto the center of 2 of the brown circles.
- Have your child glue the two ears to the backside of the paper plate, so that they are visible from the front.
- Have your child draw a nose and mouth onto the other brown circle, then glue it to the center of the paper plate.
- Have your child glue on googly eyes and your bear is done! If you don’t have googly eyes, you can cut out two small white circles and have your child draw black circles in them for eyes.
