Our theme for Summer Reading this year is music! Singing is one of the Five Practices for the Every Child Ready to Read Initiative, that focuses on early literacy skills. If you've been to our storytimes, you'll know how important music and singing are to us! We include music in everything we do with our preschool friends. So we thought it would be a great time to share with you some of our favorite music - which you can check out from the library! Laurie Berkner is a favorite in storytime. Her songs are fun, whismical and lend themselves well to storytelling and dancing. Jim Gill is another storytime fave. He is renowned among the preschool set, including teachers. Jim is a child development specialist who focused his graduate studies on the importance of play in early literacy. His very playful music reflects that focus! Here is one of our storytime standards: If you grew up in the late 80's, early 90's you'll recognize this band. They went from making alternative music to music for children! There music is just fun. My personal favorite is "Clap Your Hands"! If you are looking for something a little more mellow, check out folk singer Elizabeth Mitchell. Her soothing, folk-music inspired songs are just the thing for coming down from a busy summer day.

I read the first book in the Major Eights series. It was so cool that they all started a band with each other. When they went into the contest call the battle of the bands they got second place, they played the song called Fox Pox. This book was mostly about friendship, working together, and music.

I read Charlie the ranch dog: Charlie goes to the doctor. I like this book because he got better at the end of the story. This book is mostly about facing your fears and helping others when they are afraid.

I read Trees written by Lemniscates. It was a fiction book all about how trees help people breathe better, make homes for animals, and how they change throughout the seasons. And how they give us shade. I love shade! I really liked this book because trees are so helpful.

I read Bats in the Band. I liked it. The bats played lots of instruments at night because they were nocturnal. It was like a song. I would give it a zillion stars!
