What is the Battle of the Books?
Battle of the Books is a fun, friendly reading competition where teams of students read selected books, study together, and compete with other teams about their knowledge of these books. The Battle is open to students in 6th and 7th grade. Students interested in taking part in the competition will create teams of 2 - 6 students. Each team will also need 1 adult coach.
When is the Battle of the Books?
Friday, March 18, 2016 at 6pm at Sashabaw Middle School in the 7th Grade Gym
Can 6th and 7th graders be on the same team?
Absolutely!
Where can I checkout Battle books?
There will be copies of all books at the Clarkston Independence District Library and the Sashabaw Middle School Media Center.
In the Media Center at SMS, participants can check out up to two titles at a time. Loan periods will be for one week, with the option to renew for one week, as long as no holds exist on the title. Participants can put holds on up to two titles if the books are unavailable.
At Clarkston Independence District Library, participants can check out as many titles as they like. Loan periods are two weeks but unfortunately the library can't hold or renew titles.
All Battle titles will be marked with a special Battle sticker on the spine label. All participants in Battle of the Books will have the same sticker on their library cards. Only cards with this sticker will be able to check out Battle of the Books titles. Get your sticker at circulation desks of the SMS Media Center or the Clarkston Independence District Library.
When do I have to register my team by?
Registration is right around the corner! Forms are due to Mrs. Locke by December 4th!
How is the Battle Played?
How are answers scored?
Each question will require the book’s author and the answer to a specific question.
Correct author = 1 points
Correct answer to question = 4 points
Teams are discouraged from keeping a tally of their points. Officials will announce the winners of the Battle at the end of the competition.
How do you win?
The team with the most points - wins!
Also, the winning team will have their team name added to a trophy, which will spend the school year at the SMS Media Center and enjoy the summer at the Clarkston Independence District Library. There will be prizes for each member of the 1st, 2nd and 3rd place teams. Awards will also be given for best team name, best team poster and best team costume.

How is the Battle Played?
- Team members sit together.
- Pencils and answer sheets will be provided.
- No notes can be used.
- Each team must have an adult coach present.
- Battle will consist of several questions for each title. These can be:
- Direct quotes from a character.
- A question or statement about something that happens in the book.
- A passage from the book.
- Each answer sheet must include the author of the book as well as the answer for each question.
- Participants will be given 30 seconds to quietly discuss their answer.
- One team member, chosen beforehand (someone with good penmanship) will fill out the answer sheet and give it to the answer collector.
- After all answers are collected, moderator will give correct answer.
